iPads to Help Us Speak

My students need an iPad to help them gain independence not only in the speech room and classroom, but in their homes and communities. They need this to help them access communication software and practice speaking,

My Students

My students are amazing! They are eager to learn and participate in new activities, however lack of experiences and materials will hold them back. Technology helps them connect to the world around them.

My students are 5 to 14 years old but are all functioning on preschool level academically.

All of my students have limited social skills and have significant language deficit in expressive, receptive, and pragmatic language skills. My students are often frustrated because they cannot communicate their needs and wants. Many times they struggle to keep up with the other students because they do not speak and cannot participate in the same ways. I work tremendously hard to expose them to as many experiences within my means, however this is getting harder and harder. My students are diagnosed with intellectual disability and autism. They learn and respond positively to curriculum that is visual, kinesthetic and allows them to practice their skills repeatedly. That is why I am requesting and iPad for my students to allow them to access the curriculum, which is not a privilege, it is their right.

My Project

I am requesting an iPad for many reasons. My non verbal students can use the iPad as a communications tool with their peers and adults in the class. There are thousands of reading, writing and language apps which will allow my students to access their curriculum with repeated practice and improve their skills. They can use alternative and augmentative communication apps to practice language skills with their peers. They can use simulated shopping apps to work on life skills with money and grocery lists, and can use age appropriate reading apps to help them build their knowledge of signs in the community, to help keep them safe. There are many creative and useful ways that an iPad will used to help my students. That is why I am requesting an iPad and a heavy duty case. These materials will help my students progress toward meeting their goals.
