A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Smartphones, computers, iPads, eReaders. The need to be digitally literate in the 21st Century is no longer optional! With all of this knowledge available at our fingertips, knowledge is power. In order to access that knowledge, our students must have technology in their hands!
The majority of the students in my school come from low income homes.
When surveyed, a large majority of the students indicate that they do not have computers and/or Internet access in their homes. This lack of equitable, digital learning opportunities creates a large achievement gap between our students that come from lower income families and those from middle/upper income families.
My Project
The purpose of this grant request is to address the need for digital literacy that appears throughout the Common Core Curriculum Standards that are currently being implemented nationwide. Digital text is a critical part of being literate in the 21st Century. Our new curriculum standards call for students to use technology to help them learn rather than just having technology available. The technology that iPads offer is a perfect way to address these standards in a fun and engaging way for my young students. I am requesting enough funds to purchase 2 iPads with child-friendly, protective cases, and headphones to use with these iPads and the iPads that we already have. Students will use the iPads to practice their writing skills, play educational games, conduct simple research projects, listen to and read eBooks, create their own digital books, and participate in many more projects and activities.
I am a firm believer that students need to be engaged and immerse themselves into their learning!
The use of iPads in the classroom is a sure way to get the students excited about learning and at the same time assure me that I am adequately covering the curriculum standards for ALL learners in the process. Many of the apps that are available will promote higher order thinking and problem solving skills in students which is a vital skill in the 21st Century.
