I've been teaching many years, and have seen students struggle in school. As a teacher, I want to help my students with these struggles. I feel I can motivate these students through technology, with an Ipad mini. By the end of the year, I want these students to feel they can do anything!
I work in a school where we have a high percentage of students that receive free/reduced lunch rates.
Some of these students come from low income and low parental involvement families. These kids are just waiting for someone to light their fire, and I always hope to be that person. My school is focused in arts integration, and one way to do this, and reach kids that are struggling in any area, is through technology. Even though these students have a lot of needs, they are so loving and sweet. Every year I feel very satisfied, with the difference I make in my students lives.
My Project
I already have a few Ipads in my class, but share them with another classroom. I'm trying to slowly build up my own supply of Ipads to use in my class, and to be able to reach more students. My students will be using the Ipad mini during small group and one on one instruction, with the teacher. There will also be time for them to use the Ipad Mini, on their own, during the day. Activities they will be working on, in language arts, are alphabet letters and sound recognition, identifying sight words, writing sentences, making stories and books. Math activities they will be working on are: identifying numbers, skip counting, making sets of numbers and comparing groups of numbers, measurement skills, geometry, and addition and subtraction. I have recently attended a technology conference to learn more about different apps, and how to apply them in my classroom. There are several apps I will be using, where students can make comic books and movies, to tell information that they've learned in class.
More students will get, more time, to make learning fun and meaningful through technology.
I feel that using the Ipad Mini will help to encourage my struggling students, and those kids that need a more hands-on style of learning. Since kindergarten is the first experience most kids have with school, I want it to be a fun and successful one. The use of technology, can help change my students' lives by starting their school career off on the right foot, and by helping them to feel proud of their work.
