This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a school-based teacher leader at a Title I school with over 60% English language learners! I also teach Really Great Reading phonics intervention program. We work hard to develop phonics skills that help students become good readers. I need an iPad to deliver the phonics intervention every day. Students will manipulate letters on the iPad while learning letter sounds and eventually learning how to blend and read words. Students will also take diagnostic assessments on the iPad.

My students are from all over the world - Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Burma, Malaysia, Mexico, Africa, the Dominican Republic, Pakistan, and Nepal.

My students are refugees and immigrants who are learning English and love to come to school! However, many do not have the foundational skills they need to support learning how to read. The Really Great Reading phonics intervention program greatly supports our struggling learners. We work in groups of 3 to 4 students watching instructional videos on the iPads and manipulating letters in Elkonin boxes on the iPad and on a magnetic working board. We desperately need an iPad to complete the daily lessons and diagnostic testing that are a part of this intervention program.

My Project

This iPad will be used daily to implement the Really Great Reading intervention. Students will watch videos that support phonics and phonemic awareness. Children will manipulate letters on the iPad while learning letter sounds and blending words. Students will also complete word sorts and diagnostic tests that support the teacher's next steps in the classroom. Students are grouped according to their phonics needs - CVC words, digraphs, long vowels, etc.

This iPad will be an essential component and tool in completing the Really Great Reading phonics intervention.

Students are engaged and enthusiastic about learning how to read! This intervention is research-based and supported by programs such as Wit and Wisdom and LETRS. In conjunction with classroom instruction in Wilson Fundations, this intervention will teach our children how to read and strategies to utilize when they struggle.
