My Students

I teach at a public elementary school in South Los Angeles. Each of my students is an unique learner with many abilities and some challenges. Every student in my class is on the Autism Spectrum.

My students are developing skills to become 21st century learners and citizens.

My students are highly capable, but need assistance in accessing valuable technological skills. It is difficult for them to use a typical PC with a mouse because they do not yet understand the abstract connection between hand movements with the mouse and on screen movements.

My Project

My students need access to technology to enhance their academic and communication skills. I teach students with Autism. This school year, my class size increased from nine to twelve students. I need additional iPads to service the needs of more students.

Many are non-verbal or have low communication skills.

I have successfully incorporated iPads into our daily routine. Students utilize apps for a picture exchange communication system. Although they can not vocalize their needs and ideas, students can select an image to symbolize an idea they want to communicate. Using the picture exchange system, my students can communicate basic needs and more detailed requests. This greatly lowers their frustration and expands my ability to see the depth and complexion of their thoughts.

These iPads also allow all my students to access curriculum resources and apps designed to enhance and review concepts learned in class. The iPads provide another way to present personalized instruction for my diverse learners.
