Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

*Children love to explore and ask questions about their environment. This often becomes a difficult task for special needs students when they don't have the ability to communicate due to their language delay. *“Nothing is IMPOSSIBLE, the word itself says, I’M POSSIBLE!!” -Audrey Hepburn

The class is composed of eight autistic boys who fall within different levels of the spectrum.

There is one who is very verbal and has developed a passion for books and read aloud. Another student on the other hand, has no language and struggles with communicating his needs. The rest of the class includes students who are just beginning to articulate some sounds and even repeat words that they hear in the classroom. Acquiring the language to communicate their needs is a daily battle for these students. Our school is part of a small district with limited resources. It is a school that has been identified as a Title I school. Most of the students come from hard working families who want the best education for their children. As a new teacher at this school and district, I've faced many challenges that make it very difficult for providing my students with a high quality education. There is no curriculum in place and have limited resources for accommodating each learning style.

My Project

Imagine having the ability to facilitate the learning process for developing the language to communicate ones needs. That is exactly what these iPads will enable my students to do. They will be used during learning centers along with different apps that engage and invite students to practice the language or speech. At the same time, these devices will provide students with opportunities for practicing their fine motor skills as well as expose them to academic activities that promote writing. Students will also be able to learn about different aspects of social skills such as having the ability to take turns. There are many apps that promote the learning and the ability to collaborate with peers that I plan to use with my students.

Donations to this project will improve the classroom participation of students because it will provide students with the ability to communicate their needs.

They will not only be able to participate in class but also encourage them to practice their language outside the class. Lastly, students will more likely be able to retain the practiced skills on the iPad because they will be interactive and engaging.
