This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a classroom full of energetic third-graders. 99% of my students are English as a second language learners. Their reading abilities vary. I have non readers who need the basic reading skills and a lot of support to succeed and struggling readers who need reading comprehension and vocabulary.

I work at a title 1 inner city school.

The students at my school are African American and Latino/Hispanic (about 85% Latino). My students love to learn. They are inquisitive and enthusiastic. They love all subjects, specially reading, science, math, and music. I have personally ordered a lot of books in all subjects, at various reading levels based on my students' likes (class surveys). When the books arrive everyone gets very excited. I have a checkout system and they get to take the books home or read them in class. I see them looking at the books, browsing, trying to read them, and almost always bragging about how it's their turn to take that book home. Here's the problem. When most of my students sit to actually read the books, the excitement goes away. They try to read, but some lack the basic skills while others struggle with reading comprehension and English language vocabulary. They just can't get through the books (don't read) and quickly loose interest.

My Project

I am requesting a set of five iPads with protective covers and earphones. My students are very motivated to learn and I don't want them to lose the motivation. Third-graders are required to be familiar with technology and to read for all subject areas. As a matter fact, they have to be fluent readers to succeed in all subject areas. They even need to be able to read to do math problems. I want my students to feel successful and proud and not give up just because they can't read. I need the iPads for students to be able to work independently using a reading program, an award-winning program that provides comprehensive leveled reading resources for students. I will buy a subscription for my class, what I need is the technology for my students to have access to this program. The iPads will also be used with typing programs (my students have to be able to type) and doing research for projects independently, with a partner, or in small group.

Your donation to this project (iPads) will give my students the opportunity to have access to updated, working technology in the classroom.

The majority of my students do not have any technology at home let alone access to reading programs. By having the iPads in our class, my students will be able to practice their reading skills at their own level and work on improving them. They will also be able to work on their typing skills which they are required to use for testing and do research too.
