My Students

"If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." - Ignacio Estrada. I think of this as my bag of tricks and unfortunately, my bag is in need of some new essential tricks. iPads offer accessibility to my young students with learning or coordination difficulties.

I teach an amazing and diverse, kindergarten inclusion class.

My students range from "typical" abled students from diverse backgrounds to students with autism, language and cognitive disabilities. Our school is over 70% free and reduced lunch with a high ESOL population. My kindergarten students learn not only from me but from each other. On top of learning academic skills, my students learn compassion, empathy, social skills, and essential life skills.

My Project

iPads will be a great tool for the education and communication needs my students have. Since iPads have customizable options, the iPad can be tailored to each child and their specific needs, which make them more attractive than traditional learning devices. The iPad itself has a lot of benefits, but for my young students, especially those with autism and communication issues, the iPad offers many distinct advantages: Portability, A direct touchscreen so no mouse or stylus is required, A digital parallel to books or papers, Not having to move their eyes from a keyboard to a screen, Apps are easily organized, predictable, and accessible, Apps help break learning down into discrete chunks and topics, Students can enjoy independent learning and leisure time. There are many great programs available for the iPad that are affordable and designed to further enhance academic and social skills, speech and language skills, and fine motor skills.

The iPad mini offers so many valuable resources.

The apps will record my students' progress and additional data that can be very useful in tracking goals. Even my most challenging students can work longer and with improved attention to task when using iPad technology. All of my students will be able to work within applications that meet their needs since programs can be individualized. Finally, my students will be able to use the iPad on their own, showing increased levels of independence.
