My Students

The students in my special education classroom are highly motivated by electronics and will complete their classwork in order to have a few minutes on a device such as an iPad. We also would like to use them to complete online programs that allow us to improve math facts and reading skills.

My classroom is composed of 9 Adjustment students, also known as emotional and behavioral students, who are wonderful kids but often need more concrete motivation than your "typical" student.

We use positive behavior reinforcement and almost all of my students are motivated by the use of electronic devices such as the computer or a tablet. My students, who are low-income, do not have access to these devices at home which is what often makes them so motivating. These devices are not only motivating but allow my students to practice social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and being polite which are skills that will assist my students in the long term.

My Project

Students will be using these iPads during their choice time in which they are allowed to socialize with peers and use items. During this time there is teacher support for modeling of social behaviors if needed and students are encouraged to share (taking turns) if it is their turn. The students often enjoy playing games such as Minecraft which requires them to use their visualization skills to create a world and determine what tools/supplies they will need in order to make their world better.

At the moment we have 1 classroom computer that the 9 students must share.

I have seen an improvement in the students' social skills in respect to being patient in waiting their turn and allowing friends into their space so that others may watch as they play. More electronic devices would allow kids to practice turn-taking skills in peers and motivate more students to complete their work as they will have a greater chance of taking a turn on an electronic device.
