My Students

Electronics have become a large part of the learning process for today's students. My special needs students would benefit from more access to electronics, specifically tablets. Social emotional deficits, emotional disturbance, autism, ADHD, speech and language impairments, specific learning disabilities, and more make up the students I work with in my classroom.

Our school is a Title 1 school where more then 50% of the students come from low income families in Nashville.

The population of the community is largely diverse. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse public schools with students coming from more than 20 different countries. Several students do not have the support they need at home to be successful at school because of 1 parent homes, non-English speaking homes, and poverty stricken homes. Teachers support their needs at school with access to free breakfast and lunch, encouragement, support, and high expectations.

My Project

I need 3-5 iPads with protective cases for my 5th grade special education classroom at H.G. Hill middle school in Nashville, Tn. The iPads will be used for working on skills that I will be teaching them as well as skills that will increase their capability for learning. For example: students with learning disabilities also will have a weakness in short term memory and processing speed. There are apps for children to help strengthen these skills. Students with Aspergers (high functioning autism) struggle with social skills and emotional regulation skills. There are apps that can strengthen this skills. There are apps for fine motor skills, visual special skills, eye tracking skills, executive functioning skills, focusing skills (for our ADHD kiddos) as well as practicing spelling, reading, writing, and math skills. I believe iPads are an invaluable tool in the classroom!
