My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district having enough materials and resources is always a challenge. I rely heavily on donations in order to enhance the learning experiences of my students. Our school is fully Title I, as approximately 59% of students come from low socioeconomic homes.

Despite the many challenges they face, students at my school are excited and motivated to learn.

Parents send their children to our school hoping for better futures. Thankfully, our students come to school with eager, open minds. They just need the resources and opportunity to excel.

My Project

As a STEM magnet school, I am always looking for new ways to enhance student learning. We are currently transitioning to the new NGSS standards and resources are difficult to come by because our school district is still two years from adopting a new science curriculum.

A new iPad will enhance my students' STEM engagement in so many ways!

It will serve as a digital microscope which can be connected to the class projector. This will allow my students to see live, highly magnified images of the rocks and minerals they are studying, the owl pellets and flowers they will be dissecting in the spring, and the live isopods and darkling beetles they will be observing the behaviors of.

The iPad will also be extremely useful during robotics instruction. Currently, we are implementing a robotics program and having the iPad will enable me to assist groups in sketching their designs and making realtime changes. It will also allow me to demonstrate and instruct students in coding of the robots they design.

I would also love to use the iPad in a center which would allow students to independently dig deeper and learn more about the STEM topics we are currently studying. Apps and websites such as Khan Academy, iTunes University, possibly one of the many dissection apps, Wikipedia, astronomy apps, volcano apps, earthquake trackers, insect and plant identification apps, etc. will all be literally at students fingertips with this iPad.
