My Students

When the iPad came out, many thought of the target audience as those with privilege; however, iPads are perhaps most revolutionary when thinking about the ways they can be used in a special needs classroom.

My students all receive special education services to support their academic needs.

Most of my students are reading 2-4 grade levels behind, and although they are in middle school, they still struggle with basic phonemic awareness and basic math computation skills.

My Project

Often times there is a stigma attached to special education services; however, with the addition of iPads into intervention groups, every student will be begging to receive intervention! If each of my students in small group had access to an iPad, it would allow me to fully utilize technology to meet the individual needs of all my students. For example, students could use iBooks while using iTunes to listen to to the book on tape to improve fluency. With so many educational apps available, the possibilities for differentiation are immense.

The ultimate goal of technology has to be to better society.

This will only happen if technology is accessible to all, regardless of economic status, and this will only happen if we use technology to advance our education system. Funding this project allows my classroom to pilot interventions using iPads with students with special needs. The limits for student achievement feel endless.
