Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Special Education teacher in a high needs NYC public school. My students are academically delayed, physically disabled and emotionally disturbed. Even though they are faced with these obstacles, they are eager and motivated to learn.

The children that I encounter on a day-to-day basis are faced with insurmountable obstacles.

On top of their Special Education classification, some live in shelters, others have parents who are incarcerated, siblings in gangs, etc. Often they are stressed and frustrated with their environment. My children come to me when they need an outlet for their frustration. Often they have trouble expressing themselves which only adds to their aggravation and many struggle to find an appropriate way to deal with their feelings.

My Project

Recently, iPads have started to change the lives of Special Education students. The use of an iPad 3 will help students with physical disabilities and special needs participate during class, and will facilitate other tasks such as looking up a word, or the opportunity to type notes; it can be faster than writing for some students. Other uses for this amazing tool include: Reviewing vocabulary, E-books and audio books, a make-up work resource, viewing missed lessons (pre-recorded), creating digital projects and grammar application programs.

Imagine the usefulness of a device that would allow for the possibility of someone who relies heavily on the teacher for simple tasks, to accomplish something independently.

The pride they will walk away with will help that student soar the rest of the school day, and ultimately build the confidence they need for their high school career. Thank you for considering our project.
