My Students

I am currently teaching second graders who are mostly English is a New Language (ENLs) learners in a NYC public school. Every day, I teach my scholars the English language as well as the next generation standards. Once scholars reach 2nd grade, they’re often ready to accelerate their learning. That’s because at this point, they’ve adjusted to the more rigorous learning environment and are able to further expand their skills and knowledge in every subject area.

These scholars often need extra support for learning the English language, but always manage to come to school eager to learn!

In 2nd Grade, scholars become a more experienced writer, reader, and mathematician by practicing his/her skills in more complex and comprehensive ways. Second graders also pursue projects that involve research and critical thinking, which might include doing individual or group work and then sharing learned information through writing, speaking, and art.

My Project

My second grade scholars would benefit from the simplicity of using iPads when taking online assessments versus paper ones, which are two different versions. Many of the apps and accessibility features are already standard on iPads. The iPads will also help my scholars write their answers on digital worksheets during Google Meet meetings, etc.

An example would be while on Google Meet meetings, my lower level scholars and ENLs can write/draw on the iPad without much effort.

I can also model for my scholars during live sessions (virtually or in-person) instead of them watching asynchronous videos of the lessons. My scholars are hands-on and eager to learn new things, especially during remote learning live sessions. When scholars are not at school, they can follow along virtually on iPads and/or take their online assessments in-person since virtual and in-person assessments tend to be different which isn't fair to them as a whole.

The use of iPads will simplify technology for my scholars and will be vital for their participation and growth in success in the following content areas; Readers and Writers Workshop, Fundations/Phonics, Math, Social Studies and Science
