iPad To Connect Learners in the Virtual World

Help me give my students an Apple iPad and Apple Pencil to use in both the traditional in-person and virtual setting, which will allow me to project and further connect our thinking, writing, and brainstorming in both settings.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I am privileged to learn and grow with kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders from all over the world. Their joy of learning and love of school has made this year so wonderful despite all of our challenges. I get to watch 120 passionate high energy students stroll through my classroom door with huge smiles on their faces each day with a true desire to learn.

Our school is very diverse and full of students who have a true desire to learn.

The majority of our students live in homes that English is not their main language spoken. The only chance to learn English is within our school walls or virtually through a screen. All of our students are extremely eager to strengthen their academic and English language skills. This year is providing lots of challenges when it comes to interacting through a screen so having a the right technology tools are vital for our success navigating this new territory.

My Project

I am an English as a Second Language teacher who works with kindergarten through 2nd grade this year in both the virtual and in-person setting. At the beginning of the year we were 100% virtual and I only had a laptop to project a PowerPoint. It was very difficult to type in the document while teaching. My super old iPad does not support the pencil and had a lot of trouble projecting onto my students screen. I have had to use dry erase boards and project from circle on Teams which then only a few students could see or my image was so small they couldn't see it at all. Now that some of my students are at school, I am having the same problems with using technology to project.

Having an iPad that supports the Apple Pencil is key for me to project and use during reading and math blocks that will allow me to write in real time with my students so they can brainstorm, write and take notes together.

This is a missing piece to this new method of teaching elementary students. We will be able to make thinking maps, write sentence stems and even work out math equations together while I use my iPad as a Smartboard.

These pieces of technology will also be great to use for assessing my students using our online curriculum and assessment sites that will help me further understand their strengths and gaps in knowledge. Our district has gone digital so both in-person and virtual students have access to the same tools. Having this technology will help me further help my students succeed and navigate their new technology driven education.
