My Students

Our school is a high needs school in New York City serving students with moderate to severe disabilities. My 6th grade students are kind, hard-working, and talented.

They start every day stating: "We are SAFE!" "We are RESPONSIBLE!" "We are all a FRIEND to others!" "We are the BEST STUDENTS EVER!"

Our class has 6 students, we may be small but we are magical. We have so many abilities. This school year our goal is to excel in all subject areas, especially mathematics.

My Project

Computers have always provided excellent ways to facilitate learning and communication. For students living with autism, the innovation of the iPad provides even greater opportunities to excel. The iPads will be used in my classroom as tools to expand and strengthen the students' communication, motor, and cognitive skills. Since iPads are touchscreen, the iPad is more accessible for my students with coordination difficulties. Tapping and sliding motions are preferred by my students with emerging motor skills. The iPad also provides a variety of programs through the Apple App store for learning and recreation. In addition, I will be able to construct personal lessons designed for each individual student using the iPads. The most beneficial aspect of the iPad is the portability. My students have a full schedule. The iPads can go wherever the students go, which means they have ways to calm, focus, and learn while on-the-go. I know all my students will enjoy group learning, independent learning, and leisure time using iPads.

The students' voices:

Jordan - " I need an iPad because I want to play car racing games. I need an iPad because I want to play math games. I want to play journal writing."

Saradia - "I need an iPad because I like PBS Kids. I like math games on the iPad. I like phonics games on the iPad, too."

Jassia - " I like to play math games on the iPad. I like to watch theater, dancing, and singing on the iPad. I like to practice my sight words."

Brain - " I need an iPad because I like to play Starfall games. I like to play math games. iPad makes me happy. iPad is fun."

Please support excellent ways to facilitate learning and communication within our classroom.
