Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a group of fourth grade students who are highly enthusiastic and eager to learn something new every single day! My students always try their best at everything and anything despite the challenges that they face in their daily lives.

My students live in an impoverished area of South Los Angeles.

All of my students come from low-income families. We are a Title I school where one hundred percent of our students receive free meals. As a Title I school, we have limited supplies, limited resources, and are very low on the technology scale. My students do not all have the same opportunities at home and thus need to be exposed to as many opportunities as possible at school. One goal is to expose them to computer programming since this will be an area for many jobs in their future.

My Project

Having an iPad in our classroom will provide a wide variety of opportunities. My students will be able to use the iPad, along with the protective case and headset, individually and in small groups. There are many wonderful apps and websites which my students will be able to utilize for the completion of presentations or to enrich their learning in many areas. Computer Sciences is where many job opportunities will be when my students graduate, thus I hope to expose them to computer programming. There are several apps and websites on computer programming for kids, such as Move The Turtle, Robot School, Hopscotch, Coding sites, and Scratch sites. Using these new coding skills, my students could then create many projects as a means to show their learning across the curriculum. In addition to these apps, the students could also use green screen apps and stop motion apps to create projects to demonstrate their learning and retell stories they have read.

Donations will improve my classroom climate because we will create a culture of problem solvers who look at situations differently.

We can start immediately by diving into our coding process through the iPad technology. By allowing students to explore and learn a craft, we can foster their learning in a way that is productive and can open doors for them to explore careers down the road.
