Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are curious, inquisitive and always excited about art. I work at a K-8 center and as the elementary art teacher at my school, I have introduced photography to my 5th grade students with lessons on cyanotypes and photo-transfers.

This past school year, I added a new creative photography class to our middle school curriculum which broadened their skills in photography and mixed media as 6th grade students and introduced photography to our 7th and 8th grade students.

I plan to strengthen this new class with the addition of an iPad and photo journals. The iPad will make it easier for the students to upload their photographs to a website that will document and showcase their work. It will also help them in the use of photo editing apps and access to the internet to research their individual photography projects. With an iPad at their fingertips, they will be able to easily access apps that help them learn more about photography and grow as artists. In addition, I also want them to have their own photo journals which will allow them to reflect on their photographs as well as take notes during class time. Because these photo journals will be their own, it will serve as a way of engaging them more during class time. The iPad along with the photo journals will aid greatly in their development as photographers and visual learners.
