This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our class has a steady hum of activity. I want my students to feel so caught up in learning that they are not even aware that learning is going on. To reach my diverse learners I draw upon strategies that promote active engagement so that all my students can participate to their fullest potential.

My Kindergarteners love learning, and why wouldn't they?

It's contagious! My young scholars are in a dual language program where all students are learning English and Spanish. My class is made up of English language learners and native English speakers. What I love about teaching dual language kindergarten is that the program fosters bilingualism, biliteracy, and high levels of academic achievement through instruction in two languages--50% of our day is English and 50% is Spanish.

Our students are also developing an awareness and appreciation of the diversity and uniqueness of individuals. As a school, we are 86% economically disadvantaged and most receive free or reduced price lunch.

My Project

My students will be using the two iPad minis during independent learning time. The two rugged cases will protect the iPad minis from the any damage that can accidentally occur. They will have access to learning that combines academic content while teaching proficiency in the use of computers and applications. Technology is a growing part of our lives and because our student population is high poverty, school is their primary and sometimes only access to this technology.

The iPad minis will open up a whole new world of engagement, collaboration, and personalized learning in our classroom.

Access to personal iPads will enable my students to actively engage with academic content using even the simplest features of the iPad, such as the voice recorder, that can help improve their fluency. My students can also learn to collaborate through their creations on courses provided through code.org or apps such as Sock Puppet, where students use conversation skills and re-create stories they read.

The use of the iPad minis will provide differentiated instruction and personalized learning. These iPads will provide opportunities for my students to be able to work and excel at their own level and pace. I can personalize lessons to fit each student’s progress. Whether it is letter naming and sounds, blending, reading, or retelling--all my students will be learning and having fun!
