My Students

My students will be fighting with the entire world for jobs. They need to be introduced to math in a way that excites them and lets them know that they are able to perform and succeed at a sufficiently high level to be able to compete in the world economy and hopefully make a difference.

We are a 6th grade cluster of 48 at a 5/6 school of more than 800.

The common core standards require a significant step up to a fuller understanding of algebra and I witnessed the app Algebra Touch on a student's iPad. It will make the learning come alive on the white board. I will try to integrate the program into the Mimio projection program I use to make the lessons available in and out of the classroom. When teaching the concepts of algebra, 6th grade students need to see, experience, and integrate the workings of balance and similarities of groups and values so they can combine concrete thoughts with the theoretical aspects of algebra.

My Project

The Algebra Touch app makes each step of the algebra problem come alive. Whether cross canceling, adding, subtracting, or balancing the sides of the equation, the app directs the focus of the student towards the solving and reasoning of the algebraic expression or equation. On the board with the whole class, with small groups of students, or allowing a student to use the IPad during a learning lab or study hall will promote learning above and beyond what I can do now.

As these students head through 6th grade and move to middle school, high school, and beyond, their math knowledge will be a key factor in their levels of academic success.

We know the best jobs await in math and science fields, so it is important to team up the best resources with the best teaching methods to make the math experience as full and fun as it can be. The iPad is a tool that will enhance the learning of all students in the cluster, guiding them to success.
