My Students

Along with my colleagues, I teach music to 100 New York City students who attend a public school. All of our students are bright and energetic. They believe in possibility and experimentation, and we want to help them to discover what they can do musically.

Our students come from all five boroughs of New York City but mostly from Queens.

A majority of them are students of color and many come from households with few financial resources. These kids are motivated! They have to apply to attend our school, and they have to work hard to remain. Music represents an important creative and emotional outlet for them alongside the other rigorous courses they take.

My Project

Technology has changed music education in an extraordinary way. Online, there's an unbelievable trove of audio and video to be listened to and studied. Also, there are valuable archives of sheet music and lyrics, not to mention lessons on music theory, musician biographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc. An iPad can give us access to all of this wonderful content. But it can also be used to produce music. An iPad is a multi-track recorder, and it can be connected to a speaker and itself played as an instrument. My students will use the iPad to conduct research on music but also to record it and to play it.

This project will make a difference because we do not currently have a computer in the classroom for student use.

The iPad is less expensive and less bulky than either a desktop or a laptop but can do nearly everything those other machines do.
