My Students

Math is a subject many middle school students struggle to master. Many come in thinking they are "no good at math." I strive to teach my students that math is something that teaches problem-solving skills that will serve them well in all aspects of their lives. Everyone has problems to solve.

Our school is relatively small (for NYC) and serves a diverse group of students in grades 6 through 12.

We are working hard to attract students from many different backgrounds and strive to teach students to work together and learn from each other. We aim to build a community where collaboration is valued and celebrated as a way to increase everyone's understanding.

My Project

For many years at my previous school, I had the use of an iPad. I found it an invaluable tool in the classroom. I used it to facilitate Plickers, a free classroom response system that engages an entire classroom. I used it to track and reward students' positive behaviors using ClassDojo. Students used it for individualized and small group learning to watch explanatory videos, solve practice problems and play math games. It also allowed them to access graphing and geometry applications they used to visualize the math. At my new school, we do not have money in the budget for an iPad for my classroom.

The iPad offers so many different possibilities.

There are always new tools being developed for its classroom use. It allows me to motivate students to engage and to exhibit positive behavior in the classroom. And, it allows me to give a student or a small group of students an activity tailored to their needs for enrichment or intervention. And who knows what other things it will allow me to do in the future?
