My Project

We’ve just started the school year and in my new role, I teach humanities to the night school kids at our school in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Though Cape Cod probably brings to mind sandy beaches and wealthy tourists, most year-round residents can tell you that certain areas of the Cape, like Hyannis in particular, have widespread poverty and the problems associated with it. Students in the night school program have lost credit in the day school, usually because of significant attendance gaps. Many of those “gaps” were because of significant domestic problems, such as being displaced, violence or substance abuse at home. After students have exceeded the number of allowable absences, they are offered the chance to finish required credits after school hours in classes that run until 7 at night. In the past, these classes took place in other “day” classrooms. This year, we’ve been given a couple of rooms to use which used to be an office and a technology closet. We’re trying to make these two rooms wonderful! For students who feel like they have no home in many parts of their life, I want them to see these spaces as warm, comfortable and welcoming—and belonging to them!
