My Students

I teach students in grades 3-5 who are diagnosed with Autism, in a regional autistic support, self-contained classroom. I teach in a Title 1 School with a high percentage of students who are from low-income families.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a pervasive early developmental disorder where individuals may have problems with social behaviors, verbal and non-verbal communication, repetitive behaviors (verbal and physical), and obsessive interests.

Although my students are diagnosed with autism, they do not let autism define who they are.

My Project

As I entered by classroom the first year, I had students who were destructive and physically aggressive. I knew that to get these behaviors extinct, the classroom needed a calm down area. I was able to add a calm down corner and teach the students how to use it effectively to manage their emotions and behaviors. The area was used for deescalation, self regulation of emotions, and prevention of sensory overload. The area evolved naturally into a space for children to work independently, build on social skills, read with friends, and spend well-deserved free choice time - in addition to calming down. The calm down corner began with a large bean bag chair, soft pillows, and a foam floor but these items have been worn down and some have been thrown away due to wear and tear.

The calm down corner has proven to be a necessity in my students' success, but needs updated to meet their needs.The addition of a sturdy couch, carpet and soft pillows will provide an inviting and relaxing space for students.
