My Students

Learning to speak a new language is tough....learning to read grade-level non-fiction/informational text when you've been in the country a year or two--almost impossible!

I work at a low-income school that is roughly 30% EL (English Language Learner).

Typically--our kids come to us under-dressed, underfed, and under loved. My first job is to ensure that they're safe, clean, and comfortable. My second job is to make them feel loved and secure in their new environment. My third job is to educate them. These students--my kids--are amazing. They're positivity, perseverance, dedication, and bravery would knock your socks off. It is a joy to teach them.

My Project

I'm hoping for a minimal number of classroom magazines for my K-4th grade students. I typically have a caseload of 50 kids of varying grade levels. With the standards shifting and new testing requirements--our students need more time with informational and non-fiction text. The magazines come with built in videos, pictures, and vocabulary to make the content more accessible to English Language Learners. The articles are fun and relevant and will engage my students whilst they're learning grade/content level materials.

This will provide my students with non-fiction/informational text that is accessible for their proficiency level.

They will be able to read with confidence and learn how to properly navigate a variety of texts. This will do more for their confidence because they can feel like successful readers!
