Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are moderate to severe nonverbal special education preschool students who have autism spectrum disorder. They come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, but primarily low. The only way to engage these students is to modify materials in order to meet their individual needs, especially sensory needs. They utilize VODs (Vocal Output Devices), picture icons, communication boards, gestures, signs, and eye gaze to express their wants, needs, and opinions. I love being creative and helping them become more interactive with objects, toys, and books.

My Project

The items selected for this project will help me teach my special needs preschoolers about quantity concepts and money skills in fun, interactive activities. Learning how to be financially literate begins when we are young, especially for children who have special needs and will have difficulty with these concepts.

All children experience going shopping or out to eat with their parents, so they need to have a basic understanding of finances.

The books and toys in this project will help facilitate this knowledge in a developmentally appropriate manner. The lights and sounds displayed by the toys will also ensure to gain and maintain their attention during our interactions.
