Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This will be my 6th year at the same Title I middle school, and I can't see myself anywhere else, because of the students. Our school's population is highly diverse, and many faces the challenges that come with poverty - roughly 90% are students from a minority group and 90% receive free/reduced-price lunch. Our school is a big part of the community, where families take great pride in the successes of their children, our students.

They are students who deserve the chance to explore and engage in authentic learning experiences.

These kids take on academic challenges on top of any other struggles they may be facing. They have curiosity waiting to be unlocked, and enthusiasm waiting to be directed to a phenomenon that speaks to them. I am lucky to work with them!

My Project

The new science and engineering standards for Utah direct students to look at hot-button issues facing the humans of today and tomorrow including natural resource consumption, how to monitor and mitigate the effect of consumption, and factors that are affecting global temperature. The materials for this project will help them meet those academic goals, as well as being a citizen with scientific literacy.

My students need to be prepared to navigate a future where climate change will play a huge role in society, economics, and health.

The inquiry kit, the global warming lab, and the respiration stations kit will be an integral part of that preparation. The labs will help them gain a better understanding of the complex ways that matter cycles through the living and non-living things, and why it's important.

We also need a few smaller supplies to support learning in our classroom. To inspire interest in the natural world, we have classroom pets and plants that students can observe on a daily basis. We have a habitat set up, ready and waiting for hermit crabs. The clear shell will be especially interesting as a way to observe something that normally remains unseen. The pencils and markers will support students in writing explanations and drawing models to showcase all that they learn.
