My Students

A local biologist pointed out to me that we know more about the animals in the tropical rain forest than we do about those that live in our own backyards. Even though we live in the country, many of them have no idea about the life that surrounds them.

Our high school is a public school consisting of approximately 550 students.

Sixty two percent of them are on free or reduced lunches. In truth, a number of my students come to school simply to get something to eat. The general population of the school is comprised of approximately 40% minority students.

My Project

We are fortunate because we have a river that forms one border for our school. The biodiversity in the river is astounding - naturalists and biologists come to our river to study its diversity and the reasons for it. Yet my students remain blissfully unaware of the natural treasure that sits just outside our classroom. I want my students to experience hands-on scientific inquiry. I want them to catch the fever of curiosity that is the hallmark of great scientists.

This project is about determining the health of our river by sampling the microlife that is found there.

This project will give my students the opportunity to perform scientific tests that have real world applications. Relevance is key here. I want my students to take ownership of their work and to be confident enough to present their findings. Please help provide them with the tools they need to perform these tests! Thank you
