This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I first started my teaching journey, I thought I would teach for a couple of years. Seven years later, I am still in the classroom surrounded by the most deserving students and families from South Central Los Angeles, California.

Many of my students face adversities that many of us could not fathom.

About 95% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. All of my second graders are courageous and intelligent Black and Latino students from the South LA community. They are empathetic and resourceful learners who have thrived in our STEAM block at the end of the day. They are students who celebrate one another when they achieve a character or academic goal. They are students who are in school for at least 8.5 hours a day and call our class their second home. They are students who deserve the very best education and resources and can use your help.

My Project

When I want to enjoy a book to read, I have various seating options: my sofa, my bed, at my kitchen table, and more. My students' have 2 choices: a clipboard and carpet or their class seat at a table. By having this project funded, my students will be able to choose how they want to learn in the classroom. We need bean bags, ball chairs, wobble cushions and other flexible seating options.

My students spend 8.5 hours at school, and they deserve the opportunity to choose how they want to work and learn in our classroom.

By helping our classroom become a space that is "ours" and not just mine, my students' needs and voices will be heard. My second graders have been so invested in their learning, and I truly believe that flexible seating in the room will help them achieve all of their academic goals. Everyone should be comfortable and given the freedom to move in order to complete their work and this project will help grant that.
