My Students

My students are eager learners who have been fortunate enough to be able to start the year in a brand new school building.

My students are wonderful, bright and love to learn.

We are starting the school year in our district's newest elementary building that was just completed in August. When starting a new school, there are many resources that our students do not have. It takes money and many years to build up to getting a completely stocked classroom. Since we are just beginning, we are without the things we have become accustomed to. One of the many things we do not have is a class set of historical fiction novels to read in class.

My Project

I want to be able to introduce a historical fiction book to my students, while enjoying it with them. Most of my students love to read, but rarely choose the genre of historical fiction. The novel I am asking for is Number the Stars. This novel is set during World War II when the Nazis were rounding up the many Jewish people and forcing them into concentration camps. It is a story that will give my students an insight of exactly how horrible prejudice against others is and will be able to instill in them the importance of maintaining their beliefs and not hating others for their different beliefs.

I want to open my students' eyes to other genres of fiction and at the same time, help them to become more compassionate and understanding of all of our differences.

This novel will help me to do all of that with them.
