Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

They live in the poorest congressional district in the country, and many will be the first in their family to apply to college. They want to learn more about how they can be the change they wish to see.

My students are artistic, emotionally intelligent, and curious.

Remote learning is disproportionately hurting them since they do not have any other access besides school to the rigorous and exciting investigation of new material. Even though my school cannot afford to continue offering AP courses this year, many of my students are working together to prepare themselves for the exam. I am extraordinarily lucky to be teaching this class of incoming seniors.

My Project

As my high school seniors reenter the classroom this fall, I need to reactivate their reading skills while providing frequent opportunities for private and quiet reflection. A class set of James Baldin's "Go Tell It on the Mountain" will serve as an anchor text for my AP classes, while titles from a diverse and contemporary collection of authors will grab the attention of even my most reluctant readers. Students need to see their own identities reflected in the books they read, and so it is time for an infusion of high-interest, multicultural literature into our classroom lending library. Sustained independent reading has so many benefits to students individually and to a classroom's culture overall, and so I will commit a day of every week to students reading, journaling, and very occasionally sharing with each other about their reading. This last part will happen gradually, as I reintroduce them to the social skills necessary to speak on the spot with one's peers about their analysis.
