Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My High School is a Career and Technical education school located in the heart of Manhattan. Our students commute from all five boroughs to pursue a love of art and fashion. Students take on a tremendous work load by juggling fashion-based classes in addition to their core curriculum. Students who sign up for AP Biology are exceptionally motivated to receive a well-rounded education.

Since my students are visual, hands-on learners it is crucial to foster a science classroom that promotes student led investigations and inquiry based exploration.

As a Title One school, 80% of our population is at or below poverty level. Despite economic challenges, my students are hard working, motivated individuals with a strong desire to be competitive as they prepare for the college application process.

My Project

Attending a school that focuses on art and fashion attracts students who are hands-on, visual learners. The AP Biology curriculum contains numerous abstract concepts that are difficult to grasp through traditional classroom instruction.

Developing a classroom environment that focuses on student led, hands-on investigations truly makes biology come alive; this project would give students the opportunity to intersect their love of art and design with scientific content.

The Lab Bundle requested in this project provides materials for 10 of the 13 labs required by the College Board curriculum. The concepts emphasized in these laboratory experiments are often referenced in the exam so conducting them properly is crucial to ensuring students' success. The CD-ROM requested includes worksheet materials and extension activities that allow students to engage in inquiry based learning for each topic. Being able to explore content from units such as biochemistry, evolution, genetics and ecology in an exploratory manner enables students to learn about concepts in an environment that mirrors a college setting.

While our science department usually operates with a very limited budget, this year will be especially difficult since we have decided to offer two AP Biology classes (34 students per class). Our goal is to generate pupils who are college and career ready, but expanding our AP offerings adds strain to our already limited budget.

Giving students a competitive advantage by crafting a class that truly mirrors the college experience is crucial to their success. Please help me show students that science can be a creative and innovative class!
