Interrupting Racism Through Children's Literature

Help me give my students a class set of high-quality picture books to teach them about Black change-makers.

My Students

Creative, earnest, curious, smart...these are all words I would use to describe our class. My students this year are learners who want to find out how things work and why; who have strong opinions about the world and how to make things better, and who are brave and bold in their convictions. My students this year are readers, writers, engineers, historians, scientists, and mathematicians. They arrive at school each day with a smile and a high-five, ready to shake things up.

These are the children who are going to change the world.

I find myself inspired by the inquisitive, tenacious students who I am lucky enough to call "mine" this year. Whenever I present them with an experimental art project, a new math concept, or a chance to design something to solve a problem, I know I can count on this group of kiddos for the most creative, outside-the-box approach that one could imagine. This class is ready to learn, try new things, and change the world!

My Project

The materials for this project will be used to teach my students about the many Black Americans who have shaped our shared history. This set of high-quality picture books includes stories of scientists, inventors, musicians, artists, activists, teachers, photographers, athletes, political leaders, and more; some of these stories are well-known, but many of them are not.

My goal with this project is to educate and inspire young learners, and to empower them to interrupt racism by fostering their knowledge of Black change-makers.

These books will be used for whole-class read-alouds, small group book studies, and individual research, creating a foundation of understanding regarding the many accomplishments and achievements of Black change-makers. Students will read about and research Black Americans who inspire them, and will share their learning with a wider audience, including both younger and older students at our school. These books will allow me to teach children to address inequities head-on, with deliberation, and a with commitment to positive change.
