My Students

My students are my heroes! I was born and raised in the South, Bronx. So, I know firsthand some of the challenges my students face being brought up here. Challenges such as crime, drug use, homelessness, and violence. In fact, ¾ of my students’ families are living below the poverty level. However, this doesn’t stop them. They enter my classroom every day willing and ready to learn. I have high expectations of my students. And they never fail to raise to the challenge.

Their motivation inspires me to be the best version of myself.

Many of my students have faced traumatic experiences in their lives. And yet they rise above. They fight through the challenges and push themselves to do and be better.

These bite sized heroes also offer to help one another when one of them is struggling. Before I even have a chance to circulate the entire classroom during a lesson. Students will have their hands in the air offering to be a study buddy for a struggling classmate. They are not only concerned with their own success. They want their classmates to be successful as well. They are truly a special group of learners.

My Project

This year my school is rolling out the Computer Science for All Program. Having access to i-pads in the classroom would be a game changer. I aim to incorporate aspects of computer science into my classroom daily. Students will use the i-pads to access Scratch Jr. This is an app in which they can apply the coding skills they will be learning in class. Students will also use the iPads to access lessons I will assign to then on code.org. These assignments will be based on a student’s individual level.

Computers are changing everything and yet most students aren't exposed to computer science.

This leaves students ill prepared for a world in which coding will be a way of life. I-pads in combination with the Computer Science for All program will help to introduce my students to the lucrative field of computer science. It will allow them to work collaboratively to create programs. They will also learn to problem solve by working together to debug their programs. This exposing them to the notion that making mistakes is okay. In fact, it is a vital part of the programming process.
