Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Latianna, Bryan, Sofia, Rony, Christian, Elianny and Destiny are preparing for the trip of their lives. These students were selected by their teachers to receive partial scholarships for our school’s upcoming trip to Italy and France. These seven students displayed a passion for exploration and expanding their horizons throughout the interview process, and they were chosen to receive support in making their travel dreams a reality.

By providing these students a scholarship that covers a portion of their trip cost, you are placing international travel within their reach. They have already been contributing to their trip cost over the past fourteen months, many through their own part-time jobs, and have dedicated time to the Travel Club, a group dedicated to raising funds and learning about the countries we will visit before we depart.

The mission of the H. Abroad program is to make the experience of international travel available to all students, regardless of socioeconomic status. We believe that exploration of new countries and cultures develops a lifelong passion for learning about the world and its people. All of our students deserve this opportunity to become global citizens, and we’re asking you to be a part of that vision.

Consider: has traveling changed your life? Traveling has bred an incurable curiosity that has changed the way I look at the world. History and culture comes alive in texts, and knowledge of new peoples grows compassion. I see the world is an opportunity for discovery.

As a teacher, I desire to help my students develop this type of enthusiasm for learning. In an era of standardization and high stakes, the challenge of sparking genuine curiosity and inquiry seems greater than ever. You can help ignite a passion for discovery through supporting this trip abroad.

In Their Own Words

The goal of our project is to help a group of teenagers attend a trip to Europe for two weeks. These teenagers were selected through a rigorous interview process to ensure that the students were suitable to attend. The end product was a group of city kids who have limited knowledge on the world but have a strong yearning to learn about it and make an impact. We would like to go on this trip because it would be a new learning experience for all of us. Trying to fathom the complexities of the world through a book or screen is minuscule in comparison to a real-life experience. This is our chance to be able to expand our horizons, develop a new perspective on the world, open our minds, and forge a sense of unity amongst our human family and the world.

For our project we’ve created a democratic system to help us stay organized and focused on our goal of going to Europe. We’ve elected a president as well as a vice president and a treasurer; with this structure, we can consult with each other and have main representatives that work with our principal. We are acquiring some of our funding through events such as bake sales and selling breakfast. We’re also putting in money that we gathered through summer jobs and or savings. Finally, in order to finish our project, we’re hoping for generous donations from others or even words of encouragement to help us in our endeavors.

My world is the city that never sleeps - it's the exotic things I see while taking the subway, it's the foreigners I meet while they stare at our landmarks, it's the great diverse cultures that live here - that's my world. Although I love New York, I don’t want my world to be limited to one city. This project is my opportunity to change my perspective on the world, to expand my knowledge, to find myself in this world. I want to be more than the average tumultuous teenager - I want to be an agent of change who will dedicate his life to changing the fabric of society for the better. This project is important to me and my school community because it will allow my school community to grow and learn with me as I bring my experiences back home.
