My Students

For many students reading is difficult. Unfortunately schools are filled with a vast amount of outdated materials for them to read in their language arts class. I want my students to read a novel that is incredibly engaging so that tackling the Common Core is possible.

I teach 85 8th grade students in New York City.

They are a fantastic bunch of young adults and I want them to have the best education possible. I feel if students read a novel that appeals to current times and similar situations, we will be able to engage in complex tasks that the Common Core requires.

My Project

My students would love to read the novel, Wonder, as a whole class novel! This text will be highly engaging and motivating for my students. This text deals with a real teen issue of somebody who is living with a learning disability. Students will reflect on their own identities and learn how to tolerate and welcome differences. The novel will allow students to see how bullying can seriously hurt someone's self esteem! We will tackle comprehension as well as higher order thinking questions that challenge them and prepare them for high school and eventually higher education. My students will have independent, as well as whole class reading. They will use the story to respond to literature and think critically about life.

This donation will greatly impact my classroom!

My students have been asking when we are going to start reading a novel and I would love to be able to tell them the second novel we read will be a current one!
