Help Ms. Dorn

My K-8 Charter School is in New York City. Our students reflect the cultural crossroads of the neighborhood comprised of mostly second and third generation Latino immigrants, Hasidic, and African American families. I am blessed to teach art K-5 in a school with a richly diverse student population and a wonderfully supportive community. I have found an interactive projection and stylus system that can mount on any wipe board or flat surface, effectively making a wall surface into an interactive smart board. This would allow my students or myself to project a computer image on to the wall and manipulate it interactively with a stylus. It would create interactive spaces out of the instructional areas I already use. The system is small and can easily move from wall to wall allowing me to use it for both carpet to whole group instruction. Because this system eliminates the need for a specific board, it is more economical and portable than a smart board system. Technology is a cornerstone of my art program. Students develop their artistic voice through using art making and photo editing software on lap top computers. We learn about artists and develop knowledge of art and the world through Internet research. Students view art images, websites, and their own work, through projections from my personal laptop onto a wipe board. Currently my laptop and projector often become buried under supplies in the course of the day. They are dangerously close to damaging materials as well as student hands and elbows. Cords dragging across the floor are a hazard to student safety. I am including in my request a cart that is designed for a computer and projector to make the system more practical and safe. With an interactive system my students could create and give presentations, show their knowledge through assessment games and activities, and manipulate visual aids that are included in the system's software. When students use the latest technology to present information they act as teachers and develop a profound understanding of curriculum content. My students are part of the “high tech”, generation who are accustomed to quick and seamless accesses to information and visual media. Please consider helping us acquire an interactive system and cart to make our art studio a technology studio.
