My Students

"For me, my diary is my life, my comfort, my second existence." Ramon Gil Navarro once said. This is what our notebooks are for my students. They are the life and a large focus in our classes.

Our school is a small K-12 public magnet school located in an urban setting.

We have a diverse student body. The majority of students are on free or reduced lunch. In my classes I have English Language Learners (ELL), students who receive special education services, and gifted learners.

My Project

As part of my math and science program, I implement interactive notebooks. Students are required to update and maintain and these notebooks daily. They serve as a year-long portfolio of their learning. Their math and science notebooks contain notes, reflections, vocabulary foldables, reading graphic organizers, lab write-ups and sketches, practice problems, data graphs/charts/tables, color-coded diagrams, and more! I need copy paper to print my partially printed notes and handouts for their notebook. It is "interactive" because they are asked to cut, fold, color, draw paste and write about the content taught. They then add their work to their notebook. That is where the glue, pens, color pencils and scissors come into play.

These materials help maintain an organized record of their learning.

Interactive notebooks allow students to revisit previous content and encourages them to make connections between related math or science concepts. Students feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of the year when they can see all for their hard work in one central location.
