My Students

To meet all of my students' learning needs, I have to create lessons and a classroom culture that allows all types of learners the best opportunity to show me what they know. It will also hold students responsible for staying organized and self-monitoring their growth.

My students are mostly from low-income households where they are forced to take on adult responsibilities long before the legal age of adulthood.

I'm a middle school teacher, and I see so many of my students that need to go straight home to care for their siblings while parents are at work, live in shelters, and face struggles a lot of adults wouldn't be able to handle. At school we work hard to give all students an equal chance to feel supported and capable of anything! These children really do want to learn, and I work hard to make my classroom a place they can always feel comfortable and safe.

My Project

My students will each have their own notebook to use as an interactive notebook. These notebooks will be designed so students can learn new information about elements in literature and nonfiction. They will complete creative activities where they can express themselves artistically as well as academically, which is where the colored pencils will be used. Students will self-monitor their growth in these notebooks, which will help encourage them to continue working to reach new personal goals.

The interactive notebooks will help to make reading and writing more enjoyable for my 7th graders!

Reading and writing is the foundation for all subjects, and many of my students enter 7th grade below reading level. These interactive notebooks will be a great motivator for my students to keep working and improving these skills.
