This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our elementary school is located in SE Washington, DC, where 97 percent of all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and free breakfast; and 25 percent of all students receive special education services. In my general education kindergarten classroom, all students with or without Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) are provided a positive learning environment that addresses both their academic and social emotional needs as well as embrace their strengths; while giving them a sense of belonging.
Most of these students have academic challenges in either reading and/or mathematics or have behavioral challenges; and will benefit tremendously from additional technology in the kindergarten classroom.
It should be noted, however, that all of our students are amazing, full of energy, and enthusiastic about learning! They come to school every day ready to learn something new, and have so much opportunity for growth and the potential for excellence, if provided good, daily instruction with the appropriate resources!
In our classrooms, the interactive whiteboard is used for both reading and math lessons. The students enjoy going up to the whiteboard and interacting or touching the images, which provides them with multiple opportunities for either visual or kinesthetic learning. For example, our students can go up to the board and write specific letters, high frequency words, numbers or number sets on the board, which have been dictated or modeled by the teacher. In addition, my students love the clear audio that emanates from the stereo speakers. Also, my students enjoy watching old episodes of Sesame Street or Magic School Bus, while eating their lunch.
There has been an increased usage of interactive whiteboards in schools; and they have been proven to be useful for both teaching and learning in various ways.
Interactive whiteboards stimulate the enthusiasm of both teachers and students; more efficient interaction and/or engagement in classes; while at the same time increasing teachers' overall productivity and students' academic attainment.
Unfortunately, my interactive whiteboard stopped working mid-year last year; and I was recently informed that our school does not have the necessary funds to either replace and/or repair this vital piece of technology! Going without this vital piece of technology continues to impact the learning of both my kindergarten students; and the afterschool program that has access to my classroom in the late afternoons.
