Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom begins with students running the room and preparing for the day with assigned jobs and roles. Once the period has begun we move into creating colorful, picture and math based interactive notes to help students grasp the abstract concepts of Algebra!

Our students are the most diverse of our district.

We are a Title I school with a majority of our students eligible for free or reduced lunch. Many of our students come to school fully prepared and supplied to learn but far more do not come ready to learn. As teachers we are these students family for 8 hours a day. We must provide their tools to lead to success which sadly typically comes direct from the teacher. My students want to learn and are working towards AP math courses in high school. I teach 7th and 8th graders High School Algebra 1. Many are ready and prepared but some are not, plus all are young for learning such high level concepts that stump many adults!

My Project

My students utilize interactive math notebooks full of colorful foldables, pop outs, and Cornell style note to reach a full conceptual and skill based understanding of Algebra I. These interactive notebooks utilize paper folding, color and highlighting, glue and markers to reach their full potential. Students use these notebooks as reference tools while practicing newly learn Algebra skills like functions and polynomials. These supplies however run out every year and as teachers we are left supplying the room so that we can help each and every student reach their full potential.

If my students are able to reach full success in my Algebra 1 class they will be able to take more high level math courses like AP Calculus and Statistics better preparing them for college and beyond.

Learning Algebra at an early age can be hard but if concepts can be made more concrete rather than abstract they have a better chance of success. Please consider donating supplies to our classroom so that these students can reach their success!
