Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am teaching at a dual/world language school in Chicago and I have a self-contained classroom. My students are 3rd graders in a dual language classroom, where they are becoming literate in English and Spanish.

I use literacy centers in the classroom to facilitate my students' reading and writing skills. Literacy centers allow me to go beyond worksheets and make learning fun. The obstacle I face when developing my literacy center activities is the lack of pocket charts. I have found that students engage in activities that I create with the use of pocket charts more so than completing a worksheet. At this time, I am only able to create one literacy center activity with the use of a pocket chart.

The resources I need to facilitate this best practice is pocket charts. Pockets charts are flexible and versatile. With pocket charts, I will be able to create more interactive activities that align to skills and concepts. My students enjoy manipulating sentence strips and vocabulary cards on pocket charts. By doing so, they are learning reading strategies, writing structures, grammar skills, developing vocabulary and improving spelling.

Your help will facilitate the development of my students reading and writing skills. Most of all it will help my current and future students develop literacy skills, that will allow them to become life-long readers and learners.
