Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I work on the west side of Chicago, where the majority of my students cross gang territory to get to school. They do not often get a chance to play outside or run around and play due to parental fears and hectic schedules of modern day society. Living in Chicago, each of my students has witnessed some type of violence and have experienced the loss of someone close to them during their young lives. Safety is a major concern for our students. It is important that I give them a consistent, stable learning environment and I also need to make sure they are safe when they enter my classroom if I am going to help them succeed.
My Project
All learners need engaging experiences as they gain new knowledge and skills, but this is especially important for our youngest learners that have more limited attention spans and may not be able to read text directions. Our first grade classroom would benefit from a set of headphones as well as materials for white board activities, and both of these will engage students in learning interactively rather than simply completing a worksheet.
Hearing good examples of reading is incredibly beneficial for literacy learning.
The headphones would be used in our "Listen to Reading" center where the Raz-Kids app reads appropriate texts to the children so they can see and hear fluent, successful reading at their level. These headphones will also be helpful for our learners who struggle; they are using an app that reviews and uses letter sounds and this knowledge and practice is critical for their growth.
The whiteboards and markers will be used in small group settings for targeted instruction at their level. Though they will be most used for reading, they may also be used during math instruction small groups. Rather than completing a worksheet, students will use these materials to complete tasks with support of the teacher and will be able to quickly and easily make changes and revise their work as needed. The lines on these particular whiteboards will also assist with handwriting practice, which many of my students still need to help them be successful, clear writers.
Your support is invaluable as these young students learn how to make sense of text and grow as readers.
