My Students

My students are great, fun, loving students who are full of life. These students come from many different backgrounds; foster care, adopted, single parent, grandparent raising, and group homes. A large majority of my students face hunger, lack of proper clothing, and home support.

My students face struggles that students should not have to go through, but each day they still come to school with smiles on their faces and eagerness to learn and better themselves.

We are a Title I school. We are a diverse population with 32% Caucasian, 60% African American and 8% Other. School is the safe place and home for my students. School is where they know they are accepted and wanted.

My Project

Each of these materials will give students the opportunity to practice a learned skill through being engaged interactively with the hands-on game. For example, I have selected two phonics puzzle sorts to help students work on phonics concepts. Giving students independent time to practice sorting and working with spelling patterns will improve their decoding and reading abilities. This then will allow them to move into the reading comprehension sorting game selected. This will help them practice understanding of what they are reading, while being able to grasp key details of story without restating entire story.

These materials will allow students to work independently with self/teacher check activities during independent center activity or as work is completed early.

For math, second grade focuses on addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. I have selected skill cards to help students determine when they will use subtraction or addition during word problems. Also, there are a few varieties of place value task cards and regrouping charts for students to have a visual to help them understand concepts of larger numbers. There is also a larger teacher visual that I can use to help students understand and visualize what is happening through regrouping. Lastly, on the list of items to purchase is a number of the day chart for daily warm-ups.

Having something they can try independent will allow flexibility in students, challenging their learning without the stress of a teacher standing over their shoulder. As a teacher I can send students to practice taught skills independently, while I support students who may need more teacher support, while also using them for students who complete their work early.
