My Students

My students with autism face many challenges, but these challenges are especially apparent when it comes to language and literacy. Using interactive and kinesthetic learning strategies will help them learn to use their words to communicate and gain confidence in reading and writing.

My students are the most inspiring kids I have ever met.

They are all diagnosed with moderate to severe autism but come to school ready to learn everyday. We're at a school in inner-city NY and share our building with three other schools. Just communicating the need to go to the bathroom can create a lot of stress within my students, because many of them are non-verbal and have trouble making associations between objects and activities and their names. Despite these challenges, my students are determined to soak up as much language as they can, and I've seen the most progress with them when they've been able to interact with their materials. I want all of my varied learners to be able to access our reading and writing materials, and these interactive materials will help them do that!

My Project

These materials will help my earliest learners and my advanced learners improve their language, reading and writing skills. Many of my students are tactile learners and enjoy touching their materials. While we can always practice spelling with paper and pencil, using magnetic words and beaded letters is much more fun and effective. Since language is a struggle for many of my kids, they oftentimes get frustrated when having to constantly erase their wrong answers. With magnetic and beaded letters and words however, building words and recognizing letters becomes less of a chore and more of a game. Speaking of games, my students love and excel at puzzles! It would be great to harness their love of puzzles to help them learn how to match letters to sounds and pictures to words. The bottom line is that all of these materials are fun! Sometimes school becomes all about test scores, however I want my kids to associate our classroom with not only learning, but also a positive and fun place!

The ability to read, write, and especially speak is something many people take for granted.

There was even a time when I took these things for granted, but ever since meeting my phenomenal students, I have a new appreciation for language. I now understand how essential interactive language activities are for my students. These fantastic resources will give my students the access to language that they might not otherwise have. Please help my inspiring students improve their language skills and have fun doing it.
