Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the proud teacher of an ASD (autism spectrum disorder) classroom, where only two of my students are diagnosed with autism and the rest have been classified with other disabilities LD (learning disabled), ID (intellectual disabled), AD/HD, and behavioral issues. However, regardless of their disabilities, classifications, and issues, they are all extra special to me because during school hours they are my kids. I always said, "I didn't choose to teach, teaching chose me" because this is my second career. I chose to go back to school to be a Special Education Teacher. Every year, I have been working with very limited resources but this particular year, when I started, our classroom had nothing. I have been working with leftover materials, things I collected from other classrooms, etc. we need your help.

My Project

Fish aquariums are soothing and tranquil. Children in my classroom need as many resources as possible to control their feelings and challenging behaviors that are displayed daily. Fish don’t require as much daily care as some animals and are a safe choice for students with disabilities. We never had a classroom pet before; this will be our first Fish.

Having to take care of a living creature will allow my students to learn about responsibility, turn-taking, sharing, besides all the science concepts we can learn such as habitats, living ecosystems, etc.

This opportunity will allow my students to have a part in observing and caring for a living creature.
