I work at a Title I school, teaching art for grades PK-5 in my district. I teach art to over 500 students, seeing every student once a week. They are remarkably talented and creative, and I really want to help them grow as artists!
With the last year of combined distance learning, I have realized that many of my students do not have any experience with using even the most basic of art materials.
My goal for this upcoming school year is to provide them in person with unique, traditional, and adaptive art materials to help their creativity bloom!
My students are already brilliant and work well in the face of adversity. They are creative and work well with whatever supplies I am able to give them, whether recycled materials or trash to treasures. I want to provide the art materials they need to go further in their artistic exploration and give them some new materials as well.
My Project
By using books with my lessons, I hope to integrate building reading and literacy skills into art class. With the books we will be able to learn about influential artists, integrating the principles of design, and the elements of art, with pages full of engaging stories and illustrations to inspire students to create their own pieces. The books are also going to be valuable in improving communicative skills among my students, with social-emotional learning included. These books will also be inclusive and have diversity for which my students need and deserve.
