This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our elementary school is located in SE Washington, DC; where 97 percent of all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and free breakfast; and 25 percent of all students receive special education services. In my general education kindergarten classroom, seven of my 15 kindergarten students have Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) addressing their various needs (ie., developmental delays, speech and language impairments, autism, and/or behavior challenges).
Most of these students have academic challenges in either reading and/or mathematics or have behavioral challenges; and would benefit tremendously from the usage of technology in the classroom.
It should be noted, however, that all of my students are amazing, full of energy, and enthusiastic about learning! They come to school every day ready to learn something new, and they have shown so much growth and potential for excellence since their very first day of school back in August, which seems so long ago!
All of my students come to school excited to learn; and filled with much enthusiasm! One of their greatest joys is completing their turn on ST Math, a computer-based intervention, that helps support their learning of mathematics in our classroom. Many of my students don't always have access to this valuable math intervention on a daily basis because of the limited number of desktop computers available in our classroom, which are not always up and running. Also, the majority of our students don't always have access to technology in their homes.
These tablets would allow all of the students in my classroom to have access to ST Math, a computer-based intervention, on a daily basis; and at the same time provide my Special Needs' students the much desired mobility and flexibility to work elsewhere in the classroom with fewer distractions while accessing the general education curriculum.
Research as shown that "students who reported using computers moderately in the classroom did slightly better on assessments than those who did not have access to technology at all...." My students would benefit tremendously from additional hands-on technology in our kindergarten classroom, especially in mathematics. Therefore, at this time, I am seeking 2 tablets to be used during our Mathematics' Block during small group instruction.
Finally, kindergarten is the foundation of K-12 learning and research has shown that our students profit most from a quality learning environment that involves hands-on technology. In this day and age, our kindergarteners must be both prepared and equipped for first grade and beyond. That being the case, your generous donations are an investment in our kindergarteners' future.
