My Students

Do you remember how excited you were when you were able to do art activities in school? Well, because of budget cuts, most schools have done away with art. I am trying to help my students meet reading and writing Common Core standards through art integration and inquiry-based learning.

My students are amazing 3rd-graders who are eager to learn and put forth great effort in class with the materials we currently have.

I work with a large culturally and linguistically-diverse group of learners. 90% of our students are English Learners and 100% receive free lunch. Bringing the core curriculum to life for my students can be very challenging when there are so many things with which they are struggling, and I would like to make learning fun and engaging for them. Studies in teaching techniques have just begun to pick up the fact that one-size-fits-all lesson plans are far less effective than ones that cater to specific learning styles. From visual thinkers to tactile learners, to listeners and readers, kids pick up information much faster when using their own special methods. Arts programs are being cut in schools, supplies limited, and salaries frozen. Adding an iPad mini to my art program would give them more exciting learning opportunities!

My Project

One of the grade-level Writing Common Core Standards is that students will conduct short research projects. This project integrates art and technology, and at the same time, it will be inquiry-based and collaborative. My students will be placed in collaborative groups and will take turns using the requested iPad mini and headphones to research famous artists like Van Gogh, DaVinci, Monet, and other famous artists. They will create their own research questions and gather the information collaboratively. The possibilities are endless with new apps being developed all the time. They will have an opportunity to collaborate, share their creations with their peers, and critique each other's work. The applications I have found for the iPad mini not only help their writing and build math fluency, but also enhance the student's reading and comprehension skills. The math and reading applications offer self-checking activities that reinforce Common Core Standards.

I am asking the Lily Sarah Grace Fund to help support my project so I can better help my students become successful creative thinkers and inquiry-based learners and ultimately lead them to future success.

Please help my students learn and appreciate art. With the help of the Lily Sarah Grace Fund and other generous donors, my students will develop a love for art, and these worthwhile art experiences will provide them with opportunities to create new ideas and projects.
