Integrating Technology In Our Classroom!

My students need a replacement projector lamp for the classroom Smartboard. Our classroom currently has only one computer and the Smartboard lamp blew out forcing the entire class to share one small computer screen.

My Students

At P141K we consider all students to be deserving of rigorous instruction and valuable social relationships. The joy, and challenge, of teaching special education is providing access to these elements for students who are of extremely different abilities. In X01, the class relies heavily on the Smartboard to create engaging lessons for students to interact with and for them to interact with each other. Our class believes in a “voice and a choice” for students and they have used their voice to say exactly how much they miss the Smartboard!

Students in class X01 are diagnosed with emotional disturbance, Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder and other various learning differences.

All students are bussed in from various parts of Brooklyn and 100% of students are given free lunch. In social studies they’ve loved learning about slavery and have felt very strongly about the topic. In science, they used interactive games to learn about the respiratory system while learning how to take turns with one another. Currently, the classroom’s access to technology consists of one computer since the Smartboard bulb has blown out the entire class accesses technology sharing a single computer.

My Project

The Smartboard has become a vital tool in our classroom, as it allows the students to interactively facilitate their own learning experience. Many of our students have different learning styles, some requiring visual supports and others requiring a physical component to help them learn. Hear from the students. Khy, "I like the Smartboard to learn. We take notes and watch videos." Anthony, "We are broke, we need the Smartboard." Lukeius, "Can you donate please, we do not have the money to by a new bulb."

The Smartboard has bridged the gap by allowing the students a multi-faceted learning experience.

This school year class X01 became very passionate about social studies and slavery and the Reconstruction Era in particular. Using the Smartboard they created “escape guides” for slaves and journals. Through videos they became truly empathetic, an emotional milestone for many of our students with special needs. The Smartboard created a platform for shared experiences and interactive learning for a subject they felt truly emotional about. Having the Smartboard is a priceless tool in the classroom and one that encourages students participation. In the past the students use to come up to the Smartboard, drag pictures, create and/or read graphs, use graphic organizers and a wide array of visuals.

Since the projector has blown out, students voice that they miss the Smartboard and the class has gone through a period of readjustment. The students have not been able to learn from the Smartboard because there is not bulb. The students are no longer able actively come up to the Smartboard to add pictures, write or to interact with their own learning because the bulb is out. Additionally, due to budgeting constraints the use of consumable materials (e.g., paper, pens) are limited as the teacher, often purchase them using her own.
